K24 NEWS CRITIQUE( Julian Kamau 08-0410)

leave a comment »

My critique will be on K24, All Kenyan all the time. k24 is the youngest television station i believe. i have been watching their news and i must say that they are trying but they are not there yet. there is something about their presentation of news that does not impress me. First of all, i think that their background is pathetic. It comes across to me as boring and nothing attractive about it. There is lack of creativity in the general setting of the studio because all the anchors are normally placed in the same spot all through as they read the news. lighting is normally poor at times and hence creating a dull mood in the studio.

As compared to other television stations such as KTN, CITIZEN and NTV, K24 is way behind in terms of camera movements and lighting. Most of the times the anchor is normally facing one camera throughout the news and hence confusing the audience. The anchors should change cameras from one story to another in order to create a distinction between one story and another especially if they are related.

I have also noticed that unlike other television stations where sometimes there are two anchors in the studio, K24 normally has only one anchor throughout the news thus making the news boring. I believe that having two anchors doing news helps alot since they get to interact and even make it more natural on TV. i have also noticed that sometimes the anchors do not relate with the news they give at times. For example you will see an anchor reading sad news but their facial expression is so different from the story they are reading. The anchor could be smiling so hard while giving a story about killings or murder. This discredits the news so much and if one is watching they would easily switch to another station.
I basically think that K24 is afraid of getting out of their comfort zone and they want to maintain an old fasioned or traditional way of doing news.
K24’s opening montage is not impressive and i think that it also lacks creativity. they should come up with a more unique opening montage and news promo.

However, K24 is not all bad since i love their features and human interest stories very much. they have good reporters who get very unique stories that have not been done before. most of the features that i have watched in K24 are normally not in the other television stories. for example a feature i watched 1 month ago about rasta farians, it was so unique and fresh and l havent seen something like it before. they have comprehensive stories that you willrarely see in the other stations.

I also love the fact that they have more local content as compared to international content. They tell stories that we as kenyans can relate to and they reach the common kenyan citizen as well. i also love K24’s slogan All Kenyan all the time since its unique and can clearly distinguish itself from other stations.
I would reccomend that K24 should work on their lighting, setting of the studio, news presentation and adapting new technology as well. this will help increase their viewership since they normally have good content but television is mainly for the eye and hence they should create an atmosphere that is warm and colourful for the viewer.

An Eldoret airways jet crashed on Friday evening in Mombasa, killing around 42 passengers, among them the former Kilifi MP, Mister Paul Mhad, who was on his way to visit his constituency.

The plane which crashed around a residential area in Mombasa south, was supposed to make a brief landing at the Mombasa airport before heading to Dar Es Salam, announced the Elderet Airways pr officer.

According to the Mombasa hospital Pathologist, the number of bodies recovered was 42 in total, which mean all who were abroad died on the spot.

“The last words the pilot said to us were, we are at 4.000 feet and everything is going well”
said 45 year old Paul Mbuya, one of the survivors, “I knew something was wrong a few seconds later because he (the pilot) begun to rev the engine” added Mbuya.

The Ministry of Transport and the National Aviation Authority, responded immediately by dispatching an investigative team to the area to find out the cause of the tragic accident.

The plane crash comes only a week after a bus was involved in a road accident, that resulted in the brutal death of 45 passengers on the Mombasa-Nairobi high way.

ICC – The Africa/Kenya case – By 07-1485, Sam Lukudu (COM 467T)

The International Criminal Court (ICC) founded in 2002, is an independent organization, in that it is not part of the United Nations System. The ICC’s headquarters is in the Netherlands and the court, relays entirely on states parties, voluntary contributions from governments alongside international organizations among others.

The ICC is governed by the Rome Statue, and was mainly established to help the international community by bringing those behind serious international crimes to justice. The crimes here are no ordinary ones, they are mainly war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

The Rome statue was signed by a total of 60 countries. This includes almost all of Europe, latin America and almost half of the African countries.

Kenya being one of the signatories of the Rome Statue, following the 2007 post-elections violence which left quiet a number of Kenyans killed and thousands displaced, the ICC prosecutor Luis Mureno-Occampo later on then met with representatives of the government of Kenya to agree on the way forward concerning the perpetrators of the post-elections violence.
The two parties in 2009 then agreed that in order to prevent new violence from breaking again in 2012 (after the upcoming elections), they decide that there was a need for those responsible for the crimes committed to be prosecuted.

In December 2010, Occampo then officially released names of six individuals, also known as the Occampo six accused of being behind the crimes against humanity which were witnessed following the 2007 elections in Kenya.

The Occampo six - Photo ICC-CPI.int

The Council of Foreign Relations, reported that the ICC have received around 1.700 communications to investigate crimes allegedly committed in almost 139 countries, but 80 percent of these communications, were reportedly outside the jurisdiction of the ICC.
The CFR reported Mr. Jonh Washburn of the American NGO coalition for the ICC as saying that “The UN Security Council referred Darfur, and the other countries came forward voluntarily.”

Kenya being a signatory of the ICC, its government in a way volunteered their case to the international court. However personally I think that Africans should seriously consider strengthening their domestic/African jurisdiction, so that we solve our problems alone.

It can be done, it just needs determination and confidence, we need to believe in our selves and realize that for justice to come to place it is not a must that we run to the international community and cry for help like lost individuals or infants who don’t know how to take care of their own mess.

Nairobi campus students in Daystar University have had for a few years now, the campus clinic which mainly deal with emergency cases, as the students are provided with medical insurance for their health care in general.

The Nairobi Campus Clinic

Despite its small size, the clinic treats quiet a number of students on daily basis.

Dr. Elizabeth Wambui, who is in charge of the clinic says when students come with illnesses that require complex or more examinations that can’t be offered in the clinic, they send the student to a specialized Dr “After examining a patient here, we then decide as to whether he or she can be treated here or whether they should be referred to a different Dr elsewhere, who specializes in a given area” said Dr. Wambui.

Dr Elizabeth Wambui

The clinic has a multi-disciplinary system and it cooperates with all kinds of specialists who are usually contacted when there is need to do so, “We have very many stations, and we have a multi-disciplinary system, for example right now I don’t work alone, I liaise with other doctors and specialists”

“We have the basic equipments needed for basic examination, but the space is small” revealed Dr Wambui, when asked about the challenges they face in the clinic, adding that the students have also complained about lack of privacy due to the space challenge “There was a complaint about privacy, especially when it comes to patients who needs to be observed, and so because we only have one couch it is very challenging to have more than one patient at a go”

During weekdays, the clinic opens from 8:00 in the morning and closes in the evening at 5:00, while on Saturday it stays open until 1:00 PM.

Many are the times when women have been the victims of sexual harassment but times have changed. The hunter has become the hunted. Daystar being a Christian university, is one of the places you would least expect to find such incidences. However, you heard it yourself and clearly being a Christian University does not mean that evil will not happen.

the Star of the year exellence award-SOEA organised by DUSA turned sour as transport was delayed.
students who were dressed for the occasion were forced to wait for hours, due to the transport delays.

Students waiting for the bus from athi River, which later arrived at 9:30pm

Some of the students left athi campus as late as 10pm when the event was expected to start at 7pm.
the frustrated students heaped their blames of the DUSA officials for:
poor management
lack of proper planning
Too much was spent in the exchange of poor services

Some of the male students waiting for the bus at the main bus park before the last trasport to the venue. this was at 9:30pm

However, our efforts to access the Dusa officials for clarifications on the same issue have not yielded any fruits.

Are hand sanitizers safe?

class=”aligncenter size-full wp-image-787″ />

With recent concerns over cold and flu viruses, many people have turned to hand sanitizers to safeguard their homes and offices. The question is, do they really work and how safe are they?

The first point that must be noted in regards to sanitizers is that they were never intended as a complete replacement for washing. If a person’s hands are filthy, hand sanitizer alone cannot penetrate all the dirt and grease required to properly clean.

It is also important to know that hand sanitizers should not be used on open wounds. Moreover, it doesn’t take much imagination to see the potential hazard in storing flammable alcohol-based products in hot cars or around other heat sources.

Despite safety concerns, when used with proper precaution, hand sanitizers can be an effective tool for preventing the spreading of viruses. Although there is no guarantee that sanitizers will be effective against every type of germ, on the whole, they provide one of the best defenses against cold and flu viruses.

Preparing for the outside world

leave a comment »

Let me begin by saying that there are many ways of preparing for a job in industry and any three hour class facilitation can only begin to cover a small part of the topic. What I hoped to achieve during Friday class was just insight about the process of preparing for the outside world (job in industry.)
One of the key comments that came up is that finding a job in industry requires preparation. It would be unrealistic to finish high school, work for eight years in industry, and then expect to find a position as an assistant professor. It is just as unrealistic to finish high school, spend eight years in graduate school, and then expect to get a job in industry.
On the other had it is very important to understand the differences between industry and academics especially those that might impact your ability to find a job. Preparing for a career in industry is not just a series of steps but, more importantly, it involves a change in perception of yourself and your career (it is the most important)
Having said this in a few I really hope hat you will have a smooth take-off to the outside world
Remember: It is not always easy you have to fasten your seat belts!!
